Summer 2013 is when I saw a modification online that I think will be my favorite of all. That bunk no one sits on -- opposite the head -- usually the collection spot for our cooler, and duffle bags of clothes, etc. It's where we store the boom when not in use.
Well, it is a haven of unused space. Just under the cushion!
Yes, under the cushion. Basically it's like adding a 6"- 8" high box the full length and width of the bunk. I don't even know how much square feet that is. I'll have to measure it. Not sure who came up with this, but what genius!
Under the cushion, the lid lifts open with a finger hole, allowing access to the entire space.
The divider in the "box" creates two separate spaces, and is necessary for the strength of the "box."
"But wait," you might say. There was built-in storage under that seat to begin with. This is true, and so to access this original space Bill put access doors under the seat.
This box -- a prototype -- is pine and painted to match the interior of the boat. Bill plans on using the oak pieces on the final one, so it matches the other modifications he's added.
Here now is the final storage box ... made using oak.
First, the seat down on top of the new storage. The second photo shows the seat cushion up to show the top lid of the storage space.
Below, a bungee cord conveniently holds up the storage lid via the finger hole. You can see the original white covers to the under seat storage, which can now be accessed via the new storage access doors that Bill made. And the next photo shows the new space in use.
Here the seating area is staged with pillows. We also have a fan in the bow here to help move air around. Note that this seating area is now level with the V-berth cushion area, making it much nicer to s t r e t c h out if you're so inclined. Makes the whole area feel larger and more spacious.
Brilliant!
